There's always been the standard question: Which Tolkien book is your favorite? But now I'm going to ask: which Tolkien book was written the best way? Not necessarily your favorite, but which one was written "the best". As in, character development, story arcs, editing, etc. I really liked The Silmarillion, but it was written so poorly, people could barely get through it.
I'm going to go with The Hobbit, because it had a nice, tight story without a lot of extraneous sub plots, it has great subtle characterization, and I think it was perfect for its target audience (children).
Feel free to debate any of the above. Including whether The Hobbit is a book for children.
